    This position reports to the Process Engineering Superintendent and has no direct reports.


    Key Tasks:


    Focus is on process optimization from an engineering/technical basis. Works primarily with operations to aide in the determination and development of new process improvement projects and optimize current operations. Uses his/her technical knowledge to improve the ammonia, urea, nitric acid and ammonium nitrate manufacturing processes.


    Able to provide positive results by working independently or as a member of a small team.

    Maintains knowledge of day-to-day operations of the production unit. Vital team member within the production unit participating in the daily decision making. May act as a delegate for the unit Team Leaders or Process Specialist in either’s absence. Provides technical support during non-normal circumstances such as plant startup, shutdown and turn-around.


    Safety and Environmental – “Champion of PSM and regulatory compliance. Participant in the site behavioral based safety program.”

    • Provides PSM oversight for the production unit.
    • Sponsors Management of Change on plant modifications requirement technical prowess.
    • HAZOP facilitator for audits within the process unit.
    • Knowledgeable on the production unit environmental permit requirements for regulatory compliance.
    • Active observer in the plant behavioral based safety process (ADAPT). Requires observations, data collection and feedback of safety performance while work is being performed in the plant.

    Support Plant Operations – “Key member of the production team. Maintain optimum process performance or communicate improvement opportunity. Provide first pass Go / No Go for any departure from normal operations.”

    • Resident in the production unit. Provide on-going conversation of process performance.
    • Provides direction for optimization of process conditions daily.
    • Effectively communicate across all levels of the organization and convey all necessary technical information in a manner that is easily understood.
    • Executes field tests and consults with other specialists outside of the facility to solve operating issues.
    • Remains on call for emergency conditions and trouble-shooting.
    • Evaluates process equipment and performance, generally without specific direction. Must be able to collect and analyzing data as well as obtain other source information to makes recommendations.
    • Informs operations on current activities, significant developments and technical problems.
    • Prepares any month end production reports or utility consumption reports for financial accounting.


    Technical Point of Contact – “Keeper of the plant technical basis

    • Becomes the owner of the technical knowledge for the production unit. Technical lead for all plant process engineering activities.
    • Stays abreast of current industry technologies in process design and operation. Implement new technologies where applicable to improve plant reliability and operations.
    • Discusses technology and operating issues with other Engineering and Operations personnel at other sites.

    Capital Improvements – “Keeper of the plant technical basis and first pass Go / No Go for any planned departure away from normal operations.”

    • Identifies and communicates process improvement ideas from manufacturing for technical evaluation.
    • Makes use of available engineering software to identify critical success factors to minimize capital risk.
    • Provides technical expertise in the design, specification, selection, and operation of equipment.
    • Insures all work is done in a safe manner consistent with company, local, state, federal and health, safety and environmental regulations and procedures.
    • Develops capital improvement projects for budget submittal.
    • Manages small capital projects as needed.
    • Provides technical assistance during capital project design and construction.
    • Ensures that safety and environmental issues are a consideration of each design and construction project.

    Drafts process reports describing the technical basis and critical success factors for capital project in the production unit. Schedules and conducts meetings with operating, maintenance, and technical personnel to agree on scope of supply and plan of execution



    • Process modeling experience required, preferably Aspentech engineering suite
    • Strong organizational skill
    • Good communication skills to be able to communicate with all levels of people inside and outside organization.
    • This position requires an understanding of the plant processes and operations along with utilization of engineering knowledge and common sense.
    • Knowledge of process chemistry and project economics is required.


    • BS Chemical Engineering required
    • Masters Preferred, not required
    • 5 -15 years’ experience in chemical plant or refinery preferred
    • State Professional Engineer License desirable, not required
