Senior Research Scientist – Advanced Technology, Environmental Performance and Innovation (12 month contract) - Flexible/Remote, Canada

This position will report to the Senior Project Manager, Innovation and Development.

What you will do:

The Environmental Performance and Innovation group looks externally at opportunities and threats to our business and internally at our strengths to identify pivots within existing product portfolios or strategies to create growth into new competitive areas, market whitespace, or blue oceans.  Our focus areas are 1) Nutrient Use Efficiency, 2) Lifecycle Emissions Reductions, and 3) High Value New Products.

We are seeking an experienced and exceptional individual to identify and investigate world class technologies related to nitrogen use efficiency. The individual will be well connected in industry and academia and the technological developments currently revolutionizing the field and related developments in the fields of biochemistry, microbiology, and include the interaction of enzymes in the biosphere and rhizosphere, which contribute to soil nutrient retention and nutrient exchange. Leading edge gene technology insights may further prove beneficial.

The individual will perform extensive literature, vendor, and company reviews to prepare a metadata analysis of high potential opportunities and collaborate with parties to validate the potential and prepare presentations on the findings and results.

As a key contributor to this team, you will have access to the Nutrien network consisting of professional engineers, business managers, financial managers, agronomists, scientists, and sales and marketing professionals. Direct supporting resources may also be made available to advance high potential investigations.

The successful candidate will;

• Conduct secondary research in our focus (1) Nutrient Use Efficiency, 2) Lifecycle Emissions Reductions, and 3) High Value New Products) areas, documenting and presenting findings.
• Conduct literature reviews, landscape scans, and background research to identify new technologies and determine the potential for in-field evaluations.
• Evaluate and monitor early-stage commercialization or pre-commercial developments within the defined space.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to investigate technical capabilities, commercial viability, financial feasibility, and operational integration potential.
• Generate findings that support strategic considerations.
• Collaborate with Agronomy team to identify partnership opportunities.
• Develop positive working relationships with internal and external contacts.
• Conduct in-depth analysis of quantitative and qualitative data.

The successful candidate will bring world class expertise in their field and clearly demonstrate the value of their experience in solving complex and technically challenging problems.

What you will bring:

• Advanced Degrees in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or a related field.
• Strong research and analytical skills including model development
• Demonstrated history of connecting academia, industry, and R&D, in the development or commercialization of leading technologies.
• Entrepreneurial mindset, ambition, drive, and self-motivation
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Genuine interest in the environment, agricultural chemicals, and sustainable agricultural.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint
